Maca root has many health benefits for men’s sexual health which may be of interest to you if you are looking for a natural supplement for erectile function or to increase your libido. The use of maca root for men’s sexual health goes back to the time of the Incas, but modern day research supports the use of maca for increasing sexual desire and even fertility. It may even be useful for reducing prostate size.
Lepidium meyenii, known commonly as maca, is an herbaceous biennial plant of the crucifer family native to the high Andes of Peru around Lake Junin. It is grown for its fleshy hypocotyl, which is used as a root vegetable, a medicinal herb, and a supposed aphrodisiac.
Approximately half of U.S. men over age 50 may experience erectile dysfunction (ED) and decreased libido. If you are having trouble with your sexual health it could be a sign of a more serious medical problem. You should look into what causes ED and see if there are steps you can take to improve it. If you have ruled out a medical problem, one of the many lifestyle changes you might make is to look into supplements such as maca root.
Scientists have explored the biochemistry behind maca root for enhanced sexual function and stamina. Several different studies have found that maca root can increase sexual desire; it may improve sexual function in depressed individuals; and it can improve fertility through increased sperm count, sperm motility, and seminal volume.
One double-blind study looked at maca root in 50 men who had mild ED. The researchers gave 2,400 mg of maca root to half of the men each day, while the other 25 men received a placebo. After 12 weeks, the men who took maca had a more significant increase in the International Index of Erectile Function than the men who took the placebo. The authors stated that maca supplements provide a small but significant effect on sexual health in men who have mild ED.
How does maca work? Two substances found in maca, called macanides and macanenes, may be responsible for increasing libido and stamina. When researchers increased the amount of macanides and macanenes in animals’ diets, the animals’ sexual activity and stamina increased. There are also some polyunsaturated fats found in maca, which may also play a role in erectile function, libido, and sexual health.
Maca root does not affect men’s hormone levels, which may make it a good choice for men who do not want to affect their testosterone or estradiol levels. Researchers think that perhaps maca root works on the receptors for the hormones rather than the actual hormones themselves. This is one of the reasons that maca root is one of the top supplements for erectile dysfunction and sexual health.
There is some evidence that maca root has a postive effect on prostate health and maca health benefits may help protect men from prostate cancer. Maca root is a member of the Brassicacae family, which is known for having anticancer properties. Maca root is related to vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cauliflower, which are all cruciferous vegetables. Maca contains even higher levels of glucosinolates than other cruciferous plants. Some of the substances that are hydrolyzed from glucosinolalates have been shown to inhibit cancer in rats.
Maca root health benefits may help men with other conditions associated with an aging prostate such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate. Maca comes in different colors. In 2009, researchers studied the effect of maca color on prostate size. The researchers found that red maca appears to reduce prostate size, and yellow also has a mild, making this root possibly beneficial for men with an enlarged prostate.
If you are looking into maca root health benefits, you’ll want to know the form and dosage. Maca root is available in a powder, capsule, tablet, and extract form. A safe effective dose is 3,000 mg per day. Before you take any natural erectile dysfunction remedies, including maca root, you should talk to your health care provider doctor. Do not take more than the package directions. Maca root does not have any reported significant side effects.
